Venous Ulcer Treatment
Venous Ulcer Treatment
What are venous ulcers?
A venous ulcer is a wound or sore caused by a condition called venous insufficiency. Venous ulcers commonly affect the legs, ankles, and feet, and can take years to heal if not properly treated. Venous ulcers are typically red, purple, or brown, and may present a tingling or itching sensation. The ulcer may also be paired with a rash, fever, leg pain, swelling, or cramping.
Venous ulcers are also commonly referred to as venous insufficiency ulcers, varicose ulcers, venous stasis ulcers, leg ulcers, and skin ulcers.
What causes venous ulcers?
When unhealthy vein valves are unable to effectively support the flow of blood back to the heart, blood can pool in the legs, ankles, and feet, creating pressure, swelling (edema), and fluid accumulation. This prevents oxygen from getting to the skin tissue, resulting in thinning of the skin and susceptibility to venous skin ulcers and open sores or wounds that are unable to properly heal.
Venous ulcers are a relatively common condition. Risk factors include family history (genetics), age-related vein valve deterioration, the presence of blood clots or varicose veins, lifestyle factors (such as smoking), jobs that involve sitting or standing for long periods of time, and pregnancy.
Patients with venous ulcers often also experience related complications, such as venous stasis dermatitis.
What happens if venous ulcers are left untreated?
If you think that you have a venous ulcer, it is critical that you see a vascular specialist as soon as possible. Venous ulcers need proper care and treatment to heal properly and prevent infection. An untreated venous ulcer related infection can lead to blood poisoning, infection of the bone, loss of mobility, and other potentially serious conditions.
Venous ulcer treatment options
Venous ulcer treatment is unique to each patient’s situation. Treatment may involve eliminating infection via antibiotics and/or non-invasive vascular surgery to help the vein ulcer heal, as well as resolving the underlying causes of the leg vein ulcer, such as swelling (edema), pressure, varicose veins, and other conditions to prevent future occurrences. Venous ulcer treatment options often include ablation, phlebectomy, sclerotherapy, and other minimally invasive procedures.
