What are varicose veins?
Varicose veins are enlarged, swollen, twisted, or bulging veins that typically appear on the legs, between the thigh and foot. They are usually dark purple or blue in color and are superficial, meaning they are close to the surface of the skin and are not paired with an artery.

What are the symptoms of varicose veins?
Varicose veins often initially present as a cosmetic concern (enlarged, twisted, bulging veins) and progress over time, causing pain and discomfort, a “heavy” feeling in your legs, swelling, an itching sensation, skin discoloration, and potentially serious complications (see below).

What causes varicose veins?
Varicose veins are caused by a condition called venous insufficiency. The veins in our legs are responsible for bringing blood to and from the heart, sometimes going against gravity. The muscles in your lower legs act as pumps to push blood back to your heart. A series of valves assist in this process and when venous insufficiency is present, poorly functioning valves can lead to the pooling of blood in your veins. This condition is called venous reflux and, over time, can cause veins to become enlarged, swollen, bulging, or twisted.

Varicose veins are a common condition. Risk factors include family history (genetics), age-related vein valve deterioration, pregnancy, and occupations that involve sitting or standing for long periods of time.

What happens if varicose veins are left untreated?
Varicose veins are not just a cosmetic concern. If left untreated, varicose veins can significantly impact your quality of life, causing pain, itching, burning, swelling, leg heaviness, discoloration, and other symptoms.

Untreated varicose veins may ultimately lead to serious complications, such as blood clots (phlebitis or thrombophlebitis), venous ulcers, and bleeding. If you’re suffering from varicose veins, it is important to seek treatment from a qualified varicose vein doctor. Effectively treating varicose veins can have a significant and rapid impact on your life from both a medical and cosmetic perspective.
