What is Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS)?
Restless Leg Syndrome (also known as RLS or Willis-Ekbom disease) is a condition that causes a variety of unpleasant sensations involving the leg(s) or feet, often described as tingling, itching, twitching, burning, throbbing, or “creepy crawly” sensations. Patients often experience an urge to move their legs to alleviate these sensations.

RLS symptoms typically occur at night while laying down and often severely interfere with sleep or the ability to fall asleep. Symptoms also commonly occur after sitting for long periods of time.

What causes Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS)?
RLS is a common condition that is typically diagnosed as a neurologic disorder, but instead, is often caused by a vascular condition (venous insufficiency or venous reflux) affecting the lower extremities.

While you may not have other symptoms commonly associated with venous insufficiency or reflux, this condition may be the root cause of your RLS suffering.

Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) treatment
By treating the vascular (root) cause of RLS, instead of its neurological symptoms, many patients are able to achieve long-term relief and avoid a lifetime of often ineffective medications and associated side effects.

If your RLS is caused by a vascular condition, treatment is quick, comfortable, and involves little-to-no downtime using modern techniques and technology. Schedule a free in-office consultation with Dr. Muto to discuss your symptoms and how we may be able to help.

Dr. Paula Muto is a board-certified vascular specialist with more than 25 years of experience performing highly-effective RLS treatments that help patients mitigate the effects of the condition and get a good night’s sleep.
