Spider Vein Treatment
Spider Vein Treatment
What are spider veins?
Spider veins (telangiectasia) are small, thread-like veins near the surface of the skin. Spider veins often resemble the branches of a tree or spider webs, are typically red, blue, or purple, and are commonly found on the legs and feet. Fed by larger reticular veins, spider veins are typically darker and more noticeable when compared to varicose veins as they are closer to the surface of the skin.
Spider veins are a mild form of another common condition known as varicose veins.
What causes spider veins on the legs and feet?
Spider veins are a very common condition caused by venous insufficiency or reduced vein wall or vein valve function. Venous insufficiency results in poorly functioning valves in the feeder vein (reticular vein) that can cause blood to flow downward, rather than upward toward the heart. As a result, blood can pool near the surface of the skin, forming spider veins on your legs and feet.
Risk factors associated with causing spider veins include hereditary factors, gender (spider veins tend to affect women more than men), age-related vein deterioration or venous insufficiency, hormonal changes, and pregnancy.
What happens if spider veins are left untreated?
Spider veins can have a significant impact from a cosmetic perspective and can also cause symptoms that affect quality of life and physical comfort, such as pain, itching, and burning sensations.
If left untreated, spider veins often get worse over time.
Quick, comfortable spider vein treatment options
Fortunately, spider veins are easily treatable. The most popular and effective spider vein treatment option is sclerotherapy. Sclerotherapy involves a simple injection that causes spider veins to collapse, be reabsorbed by the body, and fade from view. Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive procedure involving no downtime that treats the root cause of spider veins quickly and effectively during a standard office visit.
Following sclerotherapy treatment, patients are fitted with compression bandages or compression socks, which must be worn for approximately five days following the procedure. Patients are able to return to normal activities immediately following sclerotherapy treatment.
For spider veins that are too small or otherwise cannot be treated effectively via sclerotherapy, we offer Veinwave. Veinwave is an innovative procedure that uses thermocoagulation to safely and effectively close or remove spider veins.
