What is Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI)?
Our veins are responsible for transferring blood between the heart and other parts of the body, including the legs. The muscles in our legs and feet play a critical role in this process, acting as pumps to push blood upward against gravity and back to the heart. This process is assisted by a series of vein valves in the legs that prevent blood that is supposed to be flowing upward, from flowing downward.
Chronic venous insufficiency (also known as venous reflux) is a condition that occurs when vein walls and/or vein valves are not functioning properly, resulting in blood pooling in the veins of the leg(s), instead of flowing upward back to the heart.
Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI) Symptoms
Chronic venous insufficiency presents in many forms and is often the root cause of all vascular conditions affecting the legs, ankles, and feet that we treat at Muto Vein Center, including:
- Varicose veins or bulging veins
- Spider veins
- Swelling and/or a feeling of heaviness
- Pain, aching, or tiredness
- Skin discoloration and/or bruising
- Venous stasis dermatitis
- Venous ulcers or sores
- Wounds that won’t heal
- Restless leg syndrome (RLS)
If you are suffering from this condition, it is important to see a chronic venous insufficiency doctor as soon as possible. If untreated, the disease can progress, resulting in potentially serious complications.
Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI) Treatment at MVC
The first step toward diagnosing and treating venous insufficiency is to assess the extent and severity of the condition using a venous ultrasound and/or other diagnostic tools. Dr. Muto and her team then develop a treatment plan in light of the results of these tests. We have a wide-variety of the latest, minimally-invasive techniques and technology available to resolve venous insufficiency and its manifestations.
Dr. Muto is a chronic venous insufficiency specialist and board-certified vascular surgeon with extensive experience helping patients resolve CVI and its symptoms. Treatment at Muto Vein Center is quick, convenient, comfortable, and generally involves little-to-no downtime.

“I was referred by my primary care NP to Dr. Muto for CVI that was causing bulging veins and severe swelling and pain, particularly after being on my feet all day. I did a video consultation, which I had never done before and should be more common in my opinion, very convenient. We started treating my CVI almost right away and I’m very happy that I was referred here. Dr. Muto is very experienced and knowledgeable.”
“I had varicose veins on both legs for years, and they were getting significantly larger, causing pain and quite a bit of swelling at times. I finally decided to make an appointment and found Muto Vein Center. It was really interesting to learn about venous insufficiency and how that was causing all of this (I thought it was more of a cosmetic issue). Dr. Muto is the definition of an expert and I’m so glad that I found her. At the risk of sounding dramatic, my life is infinitely better now that I have had this taken care of. Thank you.”
“I have a long history with venous insufficiency symptoms, including swelling and varicose veins, and had recently developed a vein ulcer. I’ve seen many doctors over the years, but I have to say that Dr. Muto has been the best. She’s definitely an expert in the field and really helped me finally address everything as a whole. As I near the end of my treatment, I feel incredibly grateful and relieved to have found a doctor who really gets it and to be in much better health as a result.”
“I live near Boston and honestly had no idea where North Andover was, but it sounded far. It turns out that it’s not far at all and is well worth the trip. It’s a smaller office and team, which I really liked. They really seemed to care, got me in last minute, knew what they were doing, answered all of my questions, and made sure I was all set on insurance coverage. A+”
